Silica Sand Suppliers
UMS have been Silica Sand Suppliers since 1988.
UMS provide a range of Silica Sands that have a high silica content (normally more than 95% SiO2) making the sand hard wearing with low attrition rates. It is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles, with sub-angular to rounded grain shape.
The composition of Silica Sand is highly variable, depending on local rock sources and conditions, but overall the most common constituent of Silica Sand is Silica (Silicon Dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the form of quartz.
To produce the quality and range of Silica Sand products required by industry, the sand goes through a number of processes:
- With appropriate planning consent, the Silica Sand is extracted through both traditional land-based quarrying methods and through dredging.
Washing, drying and grading
- To create the valuable dried, graded material which we require, the sand is washed and dried then graded to precise size specifications.
Testing, sampling and monitoring
- During production, the sands undergo frequent and rigorous testing.
Silica Sand is valued for a combination of chemical and physical properties.
Silica Sand is used for many applications in industry, including fluidised bed boilers.
Closely-sized grades of silica sand are the principal filtration medium used by the water industry to extract solids from water.
